Zevia vs Spindrift

Dr. Westman Reviews: Zevia vs Spindrift

Zevia vs Spindrift, which is better?

New sparkling drinks on the market

Have you noticed there are a lot of different sparkling waters and diet sodas? The industry has grasped the idea that people want less sugar in their drinks, leading to the creation of various new products, which I think is a good thing. Zevia is not just sparkling water; it also comes in flavors like Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, or Cola, aiming to provide familiar tastes. From a metabolic standpoint, I always recommend looking at the total carbs, not net carbs, to make a better choice. Zevia has no carbs, making it a preferred option. On the other hand, Spindrift contains two grams of total carbohydrates per serving.

Choose foods and beverages that you enjoy

If you like the taste and flavors of Zevia, go for it, as it has zero carbs. However, if you don’t enjoy it or dislike the aftertaste, there is no point in forcing yourself to consume it. It is crucial to choose foods and beverages you like while keeping the carbs low to make this program sustainable.

Carbonation in sparkling waters and sodas like Spindrift can give a little kick, providing some people with a sense of alertness or increased energy. If you are switching from regular soda to diet soda, you might miss that carbonation feeling, but overall, these alternatives are better due to their lower or zero-carb content.

Be mindful of portion size

After more than 20 years of experience, I prefer zero-carb options as it allows me to enjoy them without worrying about the quantity. On the other hand, if you opt for something like Spindrift with two carbs per serving, you will have to be mindful of the portion size based on your daily carb intake.

Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are allowed in the program I teach, especially in the early stages to help people transition away from sugar. However, some individuals may have sensitivities to certain sweeteners, so it’s essential to find one that suits you.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the goal is to defend against the metabolic effects of sugar and refined carbs, which can lead to insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, and obesity. So, switching to low-carb options like Zevia or Spindrift is a step in the right direction.
